About Me
I am a versatile writer and illustrator. I specialise in tackling complex subjects for a broad audience including children, young adults and adults.
I am also mother to three fabulous children who endlessly inspire my stories, characters and approaches.
I originally studied Fine Art Painting and Drawing at Glasgow School of Art where I painted scenes inspired by sci-fi, horror and blockbuster films. I still sneak cinematic reference into my illustrations!
When I am not writing and drawing I can be found swimming or sitting quietly in a library researching.
I sometimes lecture for Teesside University and Leeds Arts University across a range of arts programmes. I have an MA with distinction in Art Museum and Gallery Education from the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies.
"One of my main dreams as a writer has always been to work with an artist to create a comic or graphic novel. I am so overjoyed that it has begun to come true, as I have collaborated with brilliant illustrator Michelle Freeman to create a mini-comic, based around my poem 'Frogspawn'.
Working with Michelle has been so rewarding. I enjoyed the rhythm we found, and how we communicated with, and listened to, each other. I am in awe of Michelle's talent, and the final comic surpasses all of my aspirations, with the art style really playing into the surreal and pensive, but ultimately hopeful, vibes of the poem."
